The Challenge

The isolated Oamaru Airport needed a solution for the management of their runway lighting systems. The runway lights had to be turned on and off remotely so pilots could land safely. Only small private planes use the airport so a simple and remotely accessible system was required.

The Solution

The EDAC 400-02 was installed for safe landing of aeroplanes coming into Oamaru during the hours of darkness. The pilots are now able to simply call from a mobile phone to activate the EDAC 400-02 system, and turn on the runway lights.

The Outcomes and Results

Ultimately, installing an EDAC unit eliminates the need for air traffic controllers and saves on the power that would be used in keeping runway lights on all night. The EDAC 400-02 offered a cost-effective solution to providing an automated service to activate the runway lights when required.
